Behind the Brand: Meet Rochelle and Go Behind the Scenes of Her Famous Shirt

A renovation-aficionado, political junky, new mom, and queen of the perfect button down, this entrepreneur truly does it all—including designing an exclusive line of her famous shirt for Tuckernuck. We head to her home in Washington, DC to see what this rockstar go-getter is all about.

After an internship at W Magazine in New York, I ended up in DC with an internship at the White House followed by a job at a lobbying firm. It makes sense then that in founding The Shirt I created something that has some degree of frivolity to it, but at the same time does something serious. -Rochelle

While I was working in politics, I wore button downs all the time to work. But they never fit. If I wanted my shirts to fit across the chest, I had to size up but then they were big everywhere else. I would safety pin my shirts closed at the chest. I now have two patents on the technology I invented, all seamlessly designed into The Shirt (hidden buttons that prevent gaping.) -Rochelle

I always have my shirt unbuttoned low and with the sleeves pushed up. I like giving it a little edge. I rearranged the buttons so that the first unbuttoned button at the chest hits at just the right place. I usually pair it with leather (year round). Alternatively, I think it’s super cute when I see customers buttoning all the way up to the neck. -Rochelle

My own style tends toward a little more trendy, so I love that Tuckernuck has really edited the collection to look like Tuckernuck. A button down shirt can be for anyone, but Tuckernuck shows how The Shirt for Tuckernuck is polished and classic but most of all, fun. -Rochelle

Entertain: Jocelyn and Maddy Host a Rooftop Party for September and Michael

Being the founder of Tuckernuck takes a lot of work, great sense of style, and a natural knack for entrepreneurship. For founder September, this year it has also required planning a wedding (happening in just a few days). We joined September and her two co-founders, Maddy and Jocelyn, as they threw her and fiancée Michael an engagement party inspired by Capri, the wedding venue of choice. See how Jocelyn turned her New York rooftop into a romantic Amalfi oasis, and get excited for the gorgeous wedding to come.

I spent my honeymoon in Italy and can't wait to go back to celebrate September and Michael! One of my favorite purchases from that trip was this tablecloth. We bought it in Capri so it only seemed appropriate that we would use it as the backdrop for September's engagement party. -Jocelyn

A magical backdrop is the easiest way to throw a fun fête, and what is more magical and awe inspiring than the New York City skyline? It was also a neutral location for all of the wonderful friends and family September and Michael had attending from all over the East Coast. -Jocelyn

Style: Caroline's Back on Campus Looks

Every summer, Tuckernuck has an influx of all-star interns who help us out on their break from college. Before we said goodbye to undergrad and Media Studies major Caroline, we got some tips on how she's dressing for heading back to school. Follow along as she walks us through her on-campus essentials.

Since my school has such a big campus, there's tons of walking! It's important to wear shorts or pants and really comfortable shoes. Throw on tops with leggings are staples for the fall, I like this Toss Designs shirt paired with jeans.

For a brisk fall weekend, a sweater and suede leggings do the trick. Having a Barbour® vest or big scarf to layer over the look is helpful with the changing temperatures.

Fall Saturdays are game days! We have a ACC football team and it's a bit of a southern tradition to dress up a little more, wearing dresses or skirts with boots or flats. When there isn't a game, my friends and I love to go out to a nice brunch at one of the amazing restaurants in town!

The Bucket List: Ashton's Popsicle Recipe

Every season we make a bucket list of activities to check off in the months ahead. When we need some inspiration for a quick, delicious popsicle recipe, we turned to our friend and all-star chef Ashton Keefe. She's not only a chef, but also an on-air culinary instructor and food stylist. See how Ashton gets to add another satisfying check mark to her bucket list (without spilling on her all-white look).

I love the idea of transforming juices and smoothies into pops. Summer is the best time of the year for non-cooking cooking. I take whatever looks freshest at the market, allow it to macerate (sweat out all that good juice!) with a bit of sugar, blend and freeze. Couldn’t be easier.

In a recipe I always look for what’s in season and then what would look pretty. I’m a firm believer that we eat with our eyes first. It not only has to taste good, but look good.

The easiest, simplest, most delicious ice pops you’ll ever make. Embrace an everyday celebration by placing in a wine glass and topping with bubbles. Need a short cut? Purchase the pops, I won’t tell. Serves six. 4 cups of summer fruit such as peaches, raspberries, strawberries, blueberries 1/4 cup sugar The Directions Place fruit in a large bowl and pour sugar over. Toss and gently smash with the back of a fork. Allow the mixture to sit for 20 minutes until slightly juicy and delicious looking. Puree and pour in pop molds. Freeze for at least 6 hours or overnight. Place pops in glasses and top with bubbles. Instant party!

Best piece of advice when it comes to cooking? Go with your gut! Don’t worry about a recipe or rules, if you stay true to what you like and cook from your heart, everyone will love it. WHERE ARE YOU FROM? New Jersey, although I secretly love when people tell me I “seem Southern.” In what place are you the happiest? The beach. Jersey Shore, Montauk, any body of water with a drink in hand and good company. What’s your favorite outdoor activity? Running, it’s probably the only place besides the kitchen where I am totally relaxed and at ease. What do you never leave the house without? Sunscreen and a book. cats or dogs? Dogs. Instagram crush? Styled 3 Ways: Sophie's KULE Shirt Takes Maine

It’s that time of year where weekend getaways to some sort of body of water are a must. We followed along with our Creative Director to show us how she wore her KULE striped shirt on her recent trip to Mt. Desert Island, Maine. See how she wears her stripes from dock to dinner and everywhere in between.

A wrap skirt with this shirt plus my woven bag is a quick, comfy outfit for sightseeing and then lunch. The Bass Harbor Head Light is at the southern-most tip of the island, and was opened in 1858. We like to head down by boat, see the lighthouse, then eat lunch at Thurston’s Lobster Pound.

The island has many inlets and bays, so getting around by boat can be more efficient. We took a long boat ride one day to this charming foggy island. I paired down the tee with shorts. Not shown: my sweater that is totally necessary for exploring the coast by sea.

It’s not a trip to Maine without a lobster dinner with a blueberry cobbler for dessert. I survived the lobster pinch in high waisted culottes and my favorite pair of earrings from our jewelry line.

The Bucket List: Jocelyn Makes a Cherry Blossom Arrangement

Having grown up in DC, I take a lot of pride in cherry blossoms. So, naturally it’s my favorite type of flower arrangement to make come spring. The branches are so tall and sculptural and they last for a very long time.

I live in New York City where there is a neighborhood for pretty much anything. One of my favorites is the flower district. It’s 28th street between 6th and 7th avenue. The variety is vast and the prices are very affordable. They have the most gorgeous bundles of all blossoming branches, including cherry blossoms.

For this particular arrangement you will need a tall vase. I think one of the keys to any flower arrangement is variety of height. The cherry blossom branches are tall and then I fill in the area towards the bottom with more delicate green and lavender flowers.

The final result is a wild bouquet that fills a large space and is perfect for a party or just to make your home feel more cheery.

Weddings: Sophie's Blue and White St. John Wedding

Our Creative Director Sophia recently got married on St. John in her home town of the US Virgin Islands. While she and her husband Adam live in Washington, DC, Adam’s home town, they celebrated in their version of island style, which meant blue and white accents, a sunset sail, Soca music, pelicans, palms, and an evening that ended knee-deep in the Caribbean Sea. Here, she explains every detail, from her invitations all the way to the after party.

We chose Caneel Bay Resort on St. John as the venue for its timeless beauty and understated charm. It’s pretty clear that we love blue, so the invitations and welcome bags echoed the soothing color!

The seated dinner at Rhumb Lines was very low key. At this cute, Caribbean restaurant tucked away in a charming garden, we enjoyed tropical cocktails, fresh fish, and local flowers.

I would often sail by this point growing up on the nearby island St. Thomas. Sometimes, there would be a wedding setting up, and I would secretly think to myself how beautiful it would be to get married here, just a boat ride away from home. In the distance, you can even see my neighborhood.

My dad is quite dapper, so I let him choose what to wear. He chose a full seersucker suit! The bridesmaids were all in custom wrap skirts, and the flower girls in adorable French linen hand-made dresses. They carried their flowers in French baskets.

The reception took place in the Estate House, an open-air room with grand arches and stone walls. We took baskets and hung them upside down for makeshift lanterns.

We used all-white clusters of flowers for the tables, punctuated with sculptural white coral here and there. The tables were identified by creatures from Alberta Seba’s Cabinet of Natural Curiosities.

Invest in timeless pieces, not trends. Comfort is key, not just in your clothes but in your own skin. Essentials for every woman’s wardrobe- a black dress, a great bag, a classic pump, and a crisp white button-up. If you don’t LOVE it, don’t buy it!

Style: Sophie's Easy Packing Picks

Our Creative Director is lucky enough to have been born in the Virgin Islands. So while we’re shivering in the snow, she escapes to her sunny home over the holidays (don’t get us started about how jealous we are). An avid sailor and self-proclaimed adventurer, this year she embarked on a 5 day sailing trip through the British Virgin Islands. She walks us through her fuss-free picks that accompanied her.

First and foremost, I pack a great hat, sunglasses, and pareo. This hat is amazing because it covers both your face and shoulders. I wrap the pareo around my waist, tie it around my neck for a casual lunch, or use it as a makeshift beach blanket.

I wore these earrings almost every night. They’re the jewelry equivalent of a flower in you hair. Paired with this special tunic thrown right over my bathing suit, I was ready for dinner at the Bitter End Yacht Club in no time.

A Persifor dress always makes its way into my suitcase. They’re so comfortable and don’t wrinkle, which means they’re the perfect travel companion. Now if only I’d remembered to pack a brush...

The Bondi Beach bag would make Mary Poppins jealous... it holds everything! I brought it (along with the Packable Bow Hat) to the beach on a remote island called Anegada.

Behind the Brand: Classic (South) American Style

When given the chance to support artisans, especially women, we are all about it. In our most recent collaboration, we worked alongside MARIYA to create our very own Wayuu mochila purses, made by hand just for Tuckernuck. MARIYA’S founder Melissa Moriarty tells us why it’s a gift for yourself or a loved one you can feel good about.

The Wayuu mochila is named after the women of indigenous Wayuu tribe in Northern Colombia who make the bags. Mochila means “bag” or “backpack” in Spanish. Each bag is 100% handmade and one of a kind.” -Melissa

Each cross-body mochila takes approximately 20-30 days for one woman to crochet, requiring immense concentration and craftsmanship. It is a tradition passed down from mother to daughter, a skill that takes years to fully develop.

Every bottom of each bag is entirely unique. Artisans express their creativity and follow no set pattern for the bottom of their creation; it sort of turns into their signature.

We couldn’t open our first store (wahoo!) without celebrating in Tuckernuck style. So we threw a majestic, fall themed party. S’mores., fire pits, live bluegrass music... the works. Ultimate highlight? Watching our friends and family make their entrance by jumping in a pile of leaves in front of our #Tuckernucking wall. Instant belly laughs and smiles from all.
