Our Creative Director Sophia recently got married on St. John in her home town of the US Virgin Islands. While she and her husband Adam live in Washington, DC, Adam’s home town, they celebrated in their version of island style, which meant blue and white accents, a sunset sail, Soca music, pelicans, palms, and an evening that ended knee-deep in the Caribbean Sea. Here, she explains every detail, from her invitations all the way to the after party.
We chose Caneel Bay Resort on St. John as the venue for its timeless beauty and understated charm. It’s pretty clear that we love blue, so the invitations and welcome bags echoed the soothing color!
The seated dinner at Rhumb Lines was very low key. At this cute, Caribbean restaurant tucked away in a charming garden, we enjoyed tropical cocktails, fresh fish, and local flowers.
I would often sail by this point growing up on the nearby island St. Thomas. Sometimes, there would be a wedding setting up, and I would secretly think to myself how beautiful it would be to get married here, just a boat ride away from home. In the distance, you can even see my neighborhood.
My dad is quite dapper, so I let him choose what to wear. He chose a full seersucker suit! The bridesmaids were all in custom wrap skirts, and the flower girls in adorable French linen hand-made dresses. They carried their flowers in French baskets.
The reception took place in the Estate House, an open-air room with grand arches and stone walls. We took baskets and hung them upside down for makeshift lanterns.
We used all-white clusters of flowers for the tables, punctuated with sculptural white coral here and there. The tables were identified by creatures from Alberta Seba’s Cabinet of Natural Curiosities.
